Picking the Rights Plants – What’s the Difference?
Picking the right plants can be a challenge, and it’s important to think about the purpose of your plants. We’ll create a personalized plan that will provide both aesthetics and functionality for your outdoor space, and this can include a combination of trees, shrubbery, planters, and flowers, both seasonal and annual. Taking the time to create a detailed plan will help us determine which plants are suited to different parts of your yard — given sun exposure, moisture, and elevation, and having one in place will help you lower your future maintenance costs, and get the most out of your investment.
At Superior Land Services we offer installation and expertise on almost all types of plants and flowers. We often get asked to describe the differences between them, so we’ve provided a brief explanation of some of the different types of foliage you can choose from when enhancing your outdoor environment.
Annuals
Annuals are flowers that are typically planted in the spring and summer months, and only bloom for the season. They do not come back year after year, and are typically less expensive than perennials. They typically require more maintenance, and are often used as pops of color, or to fill in the spots in between other types of plants. Examples of annuals include Daisies, Marigolds, and Begonias.
Perennials
Perennials are flowers that return yearly, after staying dormant during the winter months. They are traditionally more expensive and require less maintenance. They bloom for about 4 to 6 weeks, and can eventually be split to create more perennials. Some examples include, Baby’s Breath, Bellflowers, and Maryland’s own Black Eyed Susan.
Biennials
Biennials take two years for their growth cycle to be complete. In the first year, they appear leafy and may have small blooms, and in their second year they bloom fully and completely. They do not appear yearly, however after the second growth cycle seeds can be harvested and replanted. Examples include Canterbury Bells, Forget-Me-Nots, and Foxglove.
